Laura Timpano

Hi there,

My name is Laura Timpano and I am currently in my second year as a pre-service teacher. I am studying at the University of South Australia for a Bachelor of Education. My majors are SOSE and Maths, and above anything else my most favourite subject would have to be Geography (in SOSE). I enjoy learning new and exciting things and find the subjects for this course really interesting and relevant to my development as a pre-service teacher. In my personal time I love spending time with my family and friends and enjoy movies, cooking and spending time with my two dogs.

The book I have read this week is called 'Uncollected' by Paul Jennings. This is a book comprised of many short stories that are suited for children. The story I focused on within this book is called 'On the Bottom'. The story was short and sweet and added just the right amount of humour. I really enjoyed reading this collection of stories when I was a child and thought it would be great to read them again and recognise why I liked them so much.

Ryan Alchin

Hello there!

My name is Ryan Alchin and I am an aspiring teacher who is studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle schooling degree) at the University of South Australia. I am majoring in Physical Education and English and will hopefully some day get to share my passion in these two fields with some eager to learn students!

I have found that while studying here at UniSA, I have changed and grown in many ways, making many new friendships and learning a lot of new things. My hobbies outside of schooling include reading comic books, trying out new and different foods and enjoying the company of friends and family.

All my posts on this blog will be related to the teaching of English and Literacy to young students. I will be deconstruction various features in different books for various ages, focusing on 5 picture books and 3 older novels. I hope that my assessing of these books will offer some insight into how to use them in a teaching context as well as what aspects would be beneficial in class organisation.

Until next time,
Ryan.

Julia Fergusson

Hi my name is Julia Fergusson and I am a pre-service teacher. Currently I am studying at The University of South Australia doing a Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle) degree. I am in my second year of study and I major in SOSE and Catholic Studies. At university I enjoy making new friendships and exploring topics that are new to me. In my personal life I enjoy catching up with friends and family, shopping and traveling. I have been to Bali many times and love it there because it is an opportunity to escape from a busy life. In Bali I like to relax and absorb the friendly and fascinating Balinese culture.

This week I have started to read a picture book called Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio was one of my childhood favourite books and I have read many different versions of the story. I decided to explore Collodi's version because it is illustrated beautifully and has great detail for a picture book which can help a child with their transition from a picture book to novel.

Introduction

We are just a few 2nd year UniSA students who are interested in learning as much as we can about literacy and it's power to enable people to communicate. This blog is designed for us to reflect on certain books and pieces of literature, focusing on ways to use this with our students in future practices.
